This course takes the view that technology can be both tool and tutor in language education. The role of technology in language education, both within and outside of a classroom context. Curriculum design is referenced as being based on needs analysis and technologies are examined in terms of how they meet the needs of teachers and learners. The course explores the characteristics of various CALL tools and applications. It helps participants evaluate the role of information technology in language teaching and learning. Students complete three assignments for the course. The second is to critique or design a language learning application with reference to theory; a designed application is intended to be descriptive, not something to be programmed or developed. The final task is a research proposal to investigate an aspect of technology in language education. Students are most welcome to suggest new assignments tailored to their specific skills and interests.
